Kári Stefánsson, (b. 1949, Iceland) is an Icelandic neurologist, who is the President, Chairman, CEO and co-founder of deCODE Genetics. He has pioneered the monitoring of the DNA of a large fraction of an entire country's population leading to a complete genealogy of its native inhabitants. This has led to the discovery of the neuregulin-1 gene's association with schizophrenia.

Our latest clip enables you to enter Dr. Jill Tarters world of the SETI Institue and research. Jill describes the SETI Institutes search for life on other planets. Nelly and Jill begin to create their tapestry, recording our journey on a Viking Ship across the world, and potentially much further.

Jill Tarter, Former Director of the SETI Institute

Jill Tarter holds the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. Tarter received her Bachelor of Engineering Physics Degree with Distinction from Cornell University and her Master’s Degree and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley. She served as Project Scientist for NASA’s SETI program, the High Resolution Microwave Survey, and has conducted numerous observational programs at radio observatories worldwide. Since the termination of funding for NASA’s SETI program in 1993, she has served in a leadership role to secure private funding to continue the exploratory science. Currently, she serves on the management board for the Allen Telescope Array, an innovative array of 350 (when fully realized) 6-m antennas at the Hat Creek Radio Observatory, it will simultaneously survey the radio universe for known and unexpected sources of astrophysical emissions, and speed up the search for radio emissions from other distant technologies by orders of magnitude.

Here Chris McKay a research scientist from NASA Ames Research Centre expounds his interest in life on other planets, particularly Mars to Nelly.  Chris explains the nature of terraforming and the scientific and ethical problems that may arise.

Dr, Chris McKay is a Senior Research Scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. He holds as PHD in AstroGeophysics form the University of Colorado. His research focuses on the evolution of the solar system and the origin of life. He is actively involved in planning for future Mars missions including human exploration. Chris’s exploration has involved polar and desert research, traveling to the Antarctic Dry Valleys, the Atacama Desert, the Arctic, and the Namib Desert to conduct research in these Mars-like environments.

TITLE: THE LIFE, THE SEA AND THE SPACE VIKING// Dr Nathalie Cabrol and the Licancabur Lake in Chile 

This clip introduces us to Dr. Nathalie Cabrol, Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Carl Sagan Center. Nathalie explains how she travels to extreme places such as the Licancabur Lake at 5900m elevation in Chile, in order to study them and work out what makes a planet or moon habitable.

Nathalie has been a Principal Investigator (PI) at the SETI Institute since 1998. She leads projects in planetary science and astrobiology, develops science exploration strategies for Mars, Titan, and the Outer Solar System icy moons, and designs robotic field experiments. She explores high altitude lakes in the Andes where environmental conditions are analogous to early Mars. With her team, she documents life’s adaptation to extreme environments, the effect of rapid climate change on lake ecosystems and habitats, its geobiological signatures, and relevance to planetary exploration. Since January 2015, she is the PI of the SETI Institute NASA Astrobiology Institute team that seeks to understand the impact of rapid environmental change on habitability and biosignature potential on Mars.

THE LIFE, THE SEA AND THE SPACE VIKING// Liz Taylor + Dr.Sylvia Earle at the DOER Marine

Within this snippet Nelly meets with Dr. Sylvia Earle and her daughter Liz Taylor. Sylvia, an ocean explorer introduces us to extremophiles from a human perspective. Liz Taylor discusses with Nelly the Doer Marine Submersibles and how they would fit the Space Viking Mission.

National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Sylvia A. Earle, called "Her Deepness" by the New Yorker and the New York Times, "Living Legend" by the Library of Congress, and first "Hero for the Planet" by Time magazine, is an oceanographer, explorer, author, and lecturer. She has experience as a field research scientist, government official, and director for corporate and nonprofit organizations, including the Kerr McGee Corporation, Dresser Industries, Oryx Energy, the Aspen Institute, the Conservation Fund, American Rivers, Mote Marine Laboratory, Duke University Marine Laboratory, Rutgers Institute for Marine Science, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and Ocean Futures. Earle has led more than a hundred expeditions and logged more than 7,000 hours underwater, including leading the first team of women aquanauts during the Tektite Project in 1970. 

Liz Taylor, President, Doer Marine

Liz Taylor is the President and CEO of DOER Marine. Over the past seventeen years Taylor, along with husband Ian Griffith, have grown DOER from a consulting and field services firm to a full service engineering solutions company, occupying a fifty five thousand square foot historic building in the Alameda Marina. Liz runs Project Deepsearch an endeavor to build a human occupied submersible capable of full ocean depth, providing unlimited ocean access to science. Advanced materials including glass are central to the program. The HOV 1000 design leveraged the Deepsearch R&D program for a smaller, 1000m rated, submersible. Liz has field experience in Expeditions throughout the Pacific Islands, Galapagos, Easter Island, Socorro Islands, Bahamas and Nether land Antilles, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean, Gulf of California, Alaska and Hawaii. She is also a Deep Water Horizon Study Group member, Secretary to the Science Advisory Board for MSTF and SRVI and a Marine Technology Society Education committee member.
